On Saturday 19th September 2026, the Sri Sathya Sai Centres of Leicester organised a free eye and hearing clinic for people experiencing homelessness at The Bridge Homelessness to Hope charity on Melton Street, Leicester.
A dedicated team of 4 optometrists, 4 dispensing opticians, 1 audiologist, several volunteers, and members of The Bridge team worked together to plan and deliver the clinic.
The clinic ran from 9:00am to 1:00pm, during which we were able to provide eye examinations for 20 guests. Of these, 18 were found to require new spectacles to support and improve their vision.
Those requiring spectacles were given the opportunity to choose a frame they liked. The frames were then taken away so that the appropriate prescription lenses could be fitted. The team will return in the coming weeks to deliver and fit the spectacles and make any minor adjustments required.
All eye examinations and spectacles were provided completely free of charge. The team of eye-care professionals, many of whom were from Specsavers, together with all the general volunteers, generously gave their time and expertise without charge.
People experiencing homelessness can face significant barriers when accessing healthcare and are often in greater need of eye-care services than the general population. Outreach clinics such as this are therefore incredibly important in helping to reach members of our community who may otherwise struggle to access essential care.
It was a privilege to work alongside The Bridge and all the volunteers and healthcare professionals who gave their time so generously.
