On Saturday 21st December, one of Swami’s simplest but most profound teachings “hands that help are holier than lips that pray” was put into practice at the Christmas party for the elderly in Syston. Not only were the volunteers carrying out their spiritual Sadhana in service but while doing so was completing namasmaran and celebrating the birth of Christ. Bhagawan reminds us that service is the most important aspect in getting rid of ego and attachment. If we surrender everything we do to Swami, we are removing ourselves from believing we are the doer – instead it is Swami who is the doer and we are all His instruments.
Many of the elderly are in homes on their own and therefore feel lonely during this time as Christmas is an occasion where one typically spends time with family. There is no better way than to bring everyone together and spend time with the Sai family! The volunteers served in many ways from acts as simple as making someone smile to the vigorous work behind the scenes in providing the food and organising entertainment. The day began with our guest Pastor Graham Thomas leading carols which united everyone through song. Lunch was served with multiple courses including dessert and mince pies before moving onto the games led by the youth. Everyone enjoys some healthy competition and as Swami himself says, “life is a game – play it!”
Various prizes, gifts and baubles crafted during the event were given to all the guests as they left. Giving gifts at Christmas symbolises the gifts that the wise men had brought Jesus at his birth. In this way, as we give gifts to others let us recognise the divinity in everyone as we serve them. Swami recalls an incident from the Bible in which Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. When asked why, Jesus himself answered “I am washing your feet as your servant, so you may learn to serve the world.”
As we celebrate Christmas, let us reflect on the words of Bhagawan and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Remove the “I” feeling within by surrendering everything to Swami and serve all selflessly, only then can we perform Sadhana to the best of our ability.
