On Saturday 1st July 2023, a free dental clinic for the homeless was conducted at the Willowbrook Dental Practice, Humberstone Road, Leicester for the homeless attending The Bridge – Homelessness to Hope charity on Melton Street in Leicester.
A team of dentists and nurses from Willowbrook Dental Practice, around 10 general volunteers and the team at The Bridge helped to plan and run the clinic on the day. The clinic ran between 9:00am to 12:30pm. Transport from The Bridge to Dental Practice was kindly organised by Sri Sathya Sai Centre, Leicester which is a humanitarian and spiritual organisation. The team managed to examine and treat 11 homeless. These included advice and treatment related to oral hygiene, gum care, x-rays, tooth extraction and fillings where appropriate. They were also provided free toothpaste and brushes. The feedback from users and volunteers was extremely positive.
Homeless people face huge barriers accessing health care and are in more need of dental care than the general population. So these types of clinics are so very important to help this group of people in our community who need this help the most.
